Audrey Banks influenced me. She was fun, caring, resilient, hard working very independent. She was my maternal grandma and was widowed in her early 50s, lost her home farm and had to start her life again with her 17 year old youngest son. She cleaned offices, was referred to as a tornado, took pills to make her ‘go a bit slower’, cooked kippers with a hair-net on, made the best chips and chunky knit jumpers and exposed her knickers roly-polying down a hill at Fountains Abbey aged 70. She never complained, listened well, had a wicked sense of humour and was generous friend.
