Lucy Sors – Maya Angelou

As a teenager, I was inspired by Maya Angelou’s autobiographies to discover childhood experiences in different cultures. Maya’s strength in the face of violence and adversity, expressed through her powerful words, had a significant influence on me and I read her books repeatedly. Angelou and other women writers expanded my horizons beyond our small North Yorkshire town. Through reading women’s multiple and diverse narratives, I was inspired to travel, learn languages and study social anthropology, discovering that ethnography can give a voice to the unheard. Research, teaching and inclusion which place the views and voices of children at its heart remain an integral part of my philosophy.
