We spoke to Sue Shippen about her Doctorate of Education (EdD), this is what she had to say!

The study explores how action learning sets can be used as a learning strategy that supports early years practitioners, parents, and managers to form professional and transformational relationships. It is envisaged that during the study key areas of interest will be examined, parental partnerships, maternal and paternal literacy, practitioners’ dialogic practice, impacts of early intervention on children’s development.

– Sue Shippen explains her research

When asked about what part of her research fascinates her the most, Sue replied that she is particularly interested in examining early intervention from both the facilitator and receivers’ perspectives to gain an understanding of the lived experiences of all stakeholders. She is interested in considering what is said, what is left unsaid, and what should be said.

The research design has been intriguing as it needed to meet the needs of the research and at the same time be accessible to all participants. As I wanted to deliver a participatory design, I wanted the final design to be agreed collaboratively, and we have done this through discussion and active deliberation, agreeing finally to action research, and specifically using action learning sets. The unique feature of this design is that there will be proximal (in the nursery) and distal (in the university) action learning set discussing practices, issues, and critical instances.

– Sue Shippen on what she enjoyed about doing her EdD at YSJ

Sue is a senior lecturer here at York St John University, teaching on several Education courses around her research interests which include working with parents and carers and children to develop children’s agency, early intervention, prevention and family support, understanding the relationship and power differential in therapeutic and learning relationships, and more! Her staff profile can be accessed here.
