Interview task with Amber Warren

For this task I had to produce a minute long interview on a topic that has a broad appeal to an audience with a person who has a wide knowledge on the specific topic. We were put into small groups and then allocated roles to carry out this interview. Our interviewee was Amber Warren an up and coming musician from Hull.

Working collaboratively in small groups was extremely efficient as it enabled us to carry out the task in a proficient manner. For example, we had 3 people setting up each lighting rig whilst one person spoke to the interviewee and got her ready for the interview. This ensured we could set up quickly and proficiently without having to worry about timing issues.

In order for the day to run smoothly we pre-planned the questions we were going to ask Amber and booked out a small room in De Grey – a building on York St John’s campus. This allowed for the interview to be set in a comfortable environment for everyone involved. To record the audio we used a Tascam DR100 and DR60 to allow for efficient sound recording. Due to the room being quite small it meant the sound could be picked up easily from all angles and with no background noise effecting the audio Amber could be heard very clearly. A Canon 70D was used to visually record the interview and with usage of the zoom lens it allowed a closer and more personal effect to be achieved. Furthermore, we set up a three point lighting rig, demonstrated in (Nick Bamford: Directing Television). We decided to use a light coloured wall which helped portray Amber’s happy character and friendly nature. To help convey this, we used a purple filter on the dedo lighting rig. Before we carried out the interview we deliberated and experimented with several different camera positions that would give us the most effective composition. At the start of the interview Amber and the interviewers shadows were casting on the wall which disrupted our backdrop however to solve this problem we used a multi-disc to cover up the window and stop any natural light from entering the room and creating shadows.

To edit and piece the interview together I used Adobe Premiere Pro and to design my graphic I used Adobe After Effects to make the video stylish and professional. In post-production I found it challenging to condense 10 minutes of footage into 1 minute, this led to the fluency of the video becoming slightly staggered. However, I made sure the questions and responses led on from each other so the interview made sense. The video then came out to exactly 1 minute meeting the requirements given to us in the brief.

I filled out a risk assessment form before the interview took place highlighting any problems we could be faced with during this task. Due to the interview taking place inside there were minimal health and safety issues however, we kept close watch on the temperature of the lighting rigs as they can become very hot, especially in small rooms. Therefore, when handling them we made sure to wear heat protecting gloves. Access and egress of the room was also highlighted as an issue but any problems were avoided by keeping the path to the door clear and equipment was moved to the back of the room.
