Voices in the university – TACKLING THE UNKNOWN

17th February 2016, we’re on campus at York St John University and we have the pleasure of a team meeting in the evening to discuss and familiarise ourselves with interview technique and the filming equipment.

Set up in a seminar room in the quaint surroundings of the Quad buildings, the room was furnished with sleek dark wood and a worn fire-place. Creating a project in the university’s magnificent scenery added a touch of refinement and diligence to the meeting.

We finally got the chance to practice our interview technique after spending some time researching and creating questions we would bring to the project, to help achieve our research target. Voices in the University aims to understand York St John University’s involvement in local, national and international communities. Through the method of Oral history, the project looks to bring in external voices to develop a series of thoughts and stories surrounding York St John. If you are interested in sharing your thoughts or stories about the university, then please go and explore our website here or if you wish, contact any of the team, our contact details are also on the webpage.

Back to the meeting. After playing with the ipads and camera which we will be using to help with the project, we finally settled to create an interview scene to settle some nerves. I understand the nervous feelings were shared across the team with regards to actually filming and interviewing. As it is a relatively new area to us all, the unsettling feeling of the unknown was beginning to creep in, and the side profile of the camera, I can assure you, was not a comforting factor!! Nonetheless, as we continued to familiarise ourselves with the situation we found ourselves in, I took a few brief moments to look around the room. I sensed the coming together of a genuine project and I noted my fellow team members growing as individuals in their researching roles. Nerves began to float out the window, and I find myself believing the project will be an overwhelming success. Bring on the first lot of interviews!
