Response to ‘Stonewall is Stifling Academia’

Response to ‘Stonewall is Stifling Academia’ letter in The Sunday Times 16 June 2019

As a Staff Network at York St John University, a Stonewall Global Diversity Champion, we have seen how our University has greatly benefited from Stonewall’s advice and support. The broad network of their Diversity Employers programme enables us to share and learn from each other, while many of us have benefited from their leadership and allies programmes. We have not experienced any pressure or restrictions on our academic freedom. Instead they’ve helped us create a space where everyone – students, researchers, academics and professional staff alike – can thrive, through full and open expression of their identity. We are working together to create an inclusive and respectful environment for all – with space for disagreement founded on scholarship not fear.
