This week is “Stress Awareness Week”, and this blog post begins with encouraging awareness of what stress actually is and what it looks like. It might not be as easy to spot as you would think.

We’re all aware of the word stress, but this stress awareness week are you actually in-tune with what’s going on for you? Can you recognise the signs of stress in yourself and others?

Some of the key signs of stress include:

  • Being irritable, aggressive or wound-up
  • Feeling anxious, afraid and struggling to switch off
  • Feeling like you’re unable to enjoy yourself
  • Feeling neglected or lonely
  • Constantly worrying
  • Poor sleep
  • Poor concentration

Other physical signs can not only be seen in yourself, but others too:

  • Difficulty in making decisions
  • Avoiding situations, particularly those that are difficult
  • Snapping
  • Picking at skin or biting nails
  • Acting restless
  • Crying
  • Smoking or drinking more than usual
  • Headaches, dizziness or nausea
  • Constantly feeling tired

Stress doesn’t just have to be caused by work or studying. It can be caused by relationships, family or general circumstances. For many of us, the pandemic was a source of real stress. Now things are heading back to normal again, keep an eye out for signs of stress in yourself and each other. Getting in-tune with what is going on in terms of stress is the first step in addressing it. Watch this space for another blog this week on stress..
