Having healthy boundaries is something that keeps coming up recently, so what is it all about and why is it important for our self-care?

We need to have healthy boundaries to look after ourselves, our time, our health, relationships, families, carers. Having healthy boundaries can be about knowing your values, and your value, and sticking to them. Whether it’s saying to your boss that you’re unable to work those extra hours, or to you friends that can’t join them even if they want you to because you need some alone time or asking your family member to stop talking about a specific subject to you because it hurts your feelings. Having boundaries seem difficult to set at first, but there’s a lot of help on hand to help you better understand what boundaries are, where the need for the boundary is coming from, how to compassionately put them in place, and how to potentially have those difficult conversations.

You can’t control how other people may react to your boundaries, but you can begin to prioritise yourself and your needs as an act of self-care. Below are some books to help you get started:

~ The Joy of Being Selfish – Michelle Elman

~ Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself – Nedra Glover Tawwab
