Update: upcoming History Month events; LGBT and faith events
Events this week for York LGBT History Month 2015
This week sees another nine events taking place for York LGBT History Month 2015, including three at York St John University. For a summary of the events, which include a number of talks, a film screening, a play, a discussion and an exhibition, see the blog post.
Inclusive Lent group
The University Chaplain Reverend Annie Rowley is inviting LGBT Christians to an informal, inclusive Lent group which will feature reflective readings from The Risen Dust by Reverend Rachel Mann, a lesbian trans woman who is resident poet at Manchester Cathedral. Annie says her writing combines raw honesty with great spiritual insight.
The group will meet in the Quiet Space (CP/006), which is next to the chaplaincy office, 16:00-17:00 on Tuesday 24 February and all Tuesdays thereafter until Easter. Refreshments will be provided. For more information, email Annie (a.rowley@yorksj.ac.uk).
LGBT and the Church – dispelling myths
An informal lunchtime question and answer session/discussion with University Chaplain Reverend Annie Rowley, chaplaincy volunteer Jenni Howard and LGBT Staff Network Chair Dr Fiona Thompson. Annie, Jenni and Fiona will provide a short introduction exploring their own perspectives on the impact of faith on the LGBT community, which will be followed by open discussion with a particular focus on the myths (and real issues) surrounding the Church and LGBT people.
The event will include lunch and take place in PH/011 at 12:30-14:00 on Monday 16 March.
LGBT issues in working abroad – contributions needed
The University of York are planning an open event that will explore issues for LGBT people with regards to working abroad. In particular, the event will aim to explore the issues surrounding working in countries where LGBT rights are minimal or non-existent. It may also look at issues faced by LGBT people who come here to work from other countries.
The event will take place during lunchtime on Wednesday 18 March. If you have any experiences you could contribute, contact Andy.
