Show some love for your campus with Wild Wednesdays – starting this week!

As Spring approaches, it could be the perfect time to turn your hand to greener things, as Wild Wednesdays start up again on 6 March, from 1pm to 3pm. Community Garden Volunteer Coordinator with the Living Lab, Amy Hodgson, opens the invitation to fellow students!

With the looming threat of climate change, cost of living crisis and ever-increasing social isolation, it can be hard to know where to start with positive steps to take.

I, along with fellow students and my now good friends, decided that one way we can act is to give our campus some love and learn more about growing along the way.

We are so lucky at YSJ to have an incredible Grounds team that keeps our campus beautiful and who seeks new opportunities for giving back to the environment – I see people taking photos of the snowdrops and colourful flowers every day.

Wild Wednesdays provide that space on campus to make that difference. So far, as a team, we have built new habitats for our local insects, hedgehogs, and planted garlic and onions for the upcoming year. Currently, we are prepping for the construction of our polytunnel, which everyone is so very excited about!

Gardening has done wonders not only for our campus, our planet, and our wildlife but also for ourselves! Our members tell me that it has a positive impact on their mental and physical health. It’s a good opportunity to make friends and is open to everyone.

If you would like to drop in or come along for a whole afternoon, visit the Living Lab page and scroll down to Wild Wednesdays. You can sign up and download the Campus Nature Map, complete with our meeting point (outside the Students’ Union).

Come by and help us make our university a better place!
